Self-care is more than just a trendy term—it’s a vital practice for maintaining a healthy, balanced life. Self-care doesn’t have to be something extravagant or overindulgent, but instead is the small, intentional acts you do to nurture yourself. Taking the time to slow down and focus on yourself is not something most men are taught. Instead a lot of us grow up learning to push through; to man up, to tough it out, and never get those healthy outlets that we need. It leads to stress levels rising, difficulty managing anxiety and depression, and neglecting our own needs. Things like going to the gym, reconnecting with friends, getting a good night’s rest, pursuing a hobby, spending time outdoors are ways that we can start to put ourselves first. There is no exact formula for what to practice, but instead it is about finding what works for you and making space for it.

In our fast-paced society, creating time to stop and reflect can be challenging at times. That is the beauty of therapy, it forces you to stop for an hour and be present without any distractions. Therapy is a place for men to learn about small changes that can lead to substantial growth. You can get in touch with your emotions and understand the effect suppressing them has had on your stress levels and mental energy. The importance of learning how to identify these barriers and engage in these practices can be enriching and empowering. Consistently engaging in self-care practices can improve your mood, self-esteem, sense of belonging, and can increase mental resilience. It additionally aids in the reduction of stress and prevention of burnout. Self-care is a tool that can benefit those around you as well by helping you feel recharged, reenergized, and feeling your best. Making a commitment to yourself is making a commitment to all those around you.

If you’re beginning to notice you are feeling burnt; low to no energy for daily tasks, feeling like you aren’t able to recharge, then I advise you to reach out and get started in therapy. With just a few one on one sessions, we can figure out what works for you and how to make your time a priority. My goal as your therapist is to help you understand yourself and your emotions and help you find manageable practices that adapt to your life. I aim to reconnect with what truly matters to you and allow you to live a healthier, more fulfilling life.
